Warren Buffett's Lesson for Leaders

We can't all make the big difference that Warren Buffett did in June with his $30B+ contribution to solving world issues; yet we can each make our own big difference.

Already highly regarded in the business world, Warren Buffett has become a role model for social responsibility. It is clear that he believes that with great wealth comes great responsibility to give back to society. His chosen vehicle? The Gates Foundation, whose mission is "Guided by the belief that every life has equal value, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation works to reduce inequities and improve lives around the world."

Buffett's 'old-fashioned' values have long fueled his business success; they now fuel his philosophy about divesting of the resultant wealth. Perhaps these values will also be emulated as business leaders consider how to expand their leadership and use their fortunes most effectively to improve world conditions. Peter Block defines stewardship as 'to honor what has been given to us, to use power with a sense of grace and to pursue purposes that transcend short-term self-interest'. Buffett is a model of stewardship, using the wealth that has flowed to him to serve the greater good.

As a leader, before you glance away thinking 'Well, that's Warren Buffett, but it's not me', think again. We all have our mark to leave on the people of the world. How are you going to make your own big difference?
